As of October 10, the Hoosier National Forest has banned campfires and restricted smoking because of dry conditions causing a greater risk of fire.
Forest visitors are not allowed to use stove fires or build campfires. Smoking is banned except for certain places such as enclosed vehicles or buildings.
The forest service says the restrictions are necessary for public safety and to protect the Hoosier National Forest. The restrictions will be in place until conditions improve and the forest service lifts the ban.
Violators can be punished by a fine up to $5,000 and six months in prison.
