Riding the Rails and Avoiding Robbers
in Southern Indiana
The Indiana Railway Museum is a tourist railway and museum in French Lick. The museum operates regular tourist trips, but some tours are anything but regular.
On special weekends a gang of outlaws invade the hills of Southern Indiana with the hopes of robbing the train. The local marshal and his men will attempt to apprehend the bandits and provide the train with safe passage through to the village of Cuzco.
The robberies are comparable to watching an old western movie on television. There are loud noises from black powder pistols, a staged gun battle, and horses. As you may have guessed, the good guys win in the end and the train returns safely to its station.
The Museum was founded in 1961 in the town of Westport, Indiana where the railroad operated a tourist excursion utilizing one small locomotive, three passenger cars, and about twenty volunteers. Ridership was estimated at about 500 passengers in 1962. The museum and railway remained in Westport until a move was necessitated in 1971. The organization relocated to Greensburg, Indiana where it operated until 1976 when it again changed locations.
The Museum was relocated to French Lick in 1978 after an agreement with the Southern Railway Company granted the Museum a total of sixteen miles of track stretching from West Baden, Indiana approximately one mile north of French Lick, to a small village named Dubois, to the south. The Indiana Railway Museum currently operates passenger trains over ten miles of this track from French Lick to Cuzco.
The railroad has continued to grow and currently boasts a roster of over 65 pieces of of rolling stock and locomotives, 9 full-time staff, 350 members, and 60 volunteers. In 2004, the railroad had a ridership of over 23,000 passengers.
Admission to the museum is free and the cost of tickets for the excursion train is $12 for adults and $6 for kids ages 11-3. The Indiana Railway Museum is located in the heart of French Lick on Indiana Highway 56.
Trains run at 10am, 1 & 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays between the months of April and October. During November trains run at 1pm only on Saturday and Sunday. Between June and October trains also run on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1pm. The museum does operate trains on Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day at 10am 1 & 4 pm.
